"Krahn's concerns were borne out last year when donor agencies including the World Food Programme, filled a major wetland in southern Laos in order to increase rice production. What they failed to question was the role the wetlands had in local diets.

"They saw a swamp; the women saw snails, fish, water weeds, frogs, eels, and edible roots to be eaten and bartered for rice. Filling the wetland resulted in protein and micronutrient malnutrition for the rice farmers, whose supply of other foods had gone, and hunger and dependency for the people who neither had goods to barter nor food to eat. "

Laos and Cambodia are to part company from Cuba, Iran, Myanmar, North Korea, Sudan and Syria. Now that each of the two has "eased to be a Marxist-Leninist country", US businesses active there will now be eligible to loans and credit from the US Export-Import Bank. It's not clear from the article whether or not this marks any change in trade arrangements with non-US businesses.

A noteworthy phrase in the agency report is "the United States has been moving closer to both nations, where China is also stepping up influence".
There's also an editorial on this in the Bangkok Post, pointing out that this may not be good news for Thai companies investing in Laos and Cambodia.

Reasonably well researched (but for some inaccuracies about transport*) travel piece about Xieng Khouang and the Plain of Jars, albeit with a strangely inapposite introduction about NGOs.

The article gives the impression it was written two decades ago, but it's worth a read and includes a telling aerial photograph of bomb craters.
